I played: Demonschool

A mini-review

I played Demonschool (On Steam). It describes itself as a tactic RPG “where motion equals action”.

I see large potential in this concept. But sadly, it didn’t deliver on this completely. The combat system seems inspired by Into The Breach. The game has a simple calender system and day progression that reminds me of Persona.

If you know anything about Into The Breach, you’ll understand me when I say that this is less a “tactics RPG” and more a “puzzle RPG”.

There’s little progression in the game. Yes, you can unlock techniques and aspect shifts. Each character can equip up to two of the former and one of the latter. These techniques, but particularly aspect shifts, can change how a character plays.

I found the combat system a bit too repetitive. Near the end game they introduce a few drastic changes to the combat. That was a fun surprise. I would’ve appreciated more of that variety.

If you enjoy this combat, you’ll enjoy the game.

The game contains some mini-games as well. These are all very repetitive. Definitely the worst part of the game. Maybe I’m more negative, because I spent nearly two hours to get the last fish in the fishing mini-game.

The story is adequate. The game uses comedy and dark humour a lot. But I felt that there was not enough seriousness in the dramatic moments.

The cast of characters is huge. The characters varied, both in combat gameplay and in writing. They are fun, but a bit flat.

Recommendation: Maybe; if you like the combat system, go for it. I don’t recommend it for the story alone.
